These are some comments I get when my friends and I were discussing about a particular song. There can be more than 101 comments as we go on..
Friends, what makes you decide you like a song?
Is it because of the music?
The singer?
The lyrics?
Or ??????
Kindly share your views. Many thanks :)

responses and comments:
It's a combination of the words and the music...for the most part my favs would be something soft like light rock. [jillhill]
Yup yup, agree totally. Jamie would like to share some nice songs at her website. =) http://coolcuteprincesses.blogspot.com [Jamielin]
Usually it is the tune , then I listen to the lyrics , I sing along in the car all the time and Ross laughs at MY my words . I always say mine are best anyway lol xx [weemam]
Certainly, I would say same if I am able to change the lyrics on the fly. It takes skill to change the lyrics. LOL. [whyaskq]
Sometimes, it is the singer. If you like a singer, you are likely favorably disposed towards his/her songs. But most times, I like songs in an "ala carte" way. I just like them for the tune, the music mainly. [lordwarwizard]
i like a song when the melody caresses my ears...i have sensitive ears so there are songs that do not appeal. otherwise, i usually like what is commonly heard, because then it becomes familiar., lol when it is unfamiliar, i don't like songs that easily [spoiled311]
I too have disliked songs which I am not familiar, but somehow get to like the same song in the end. How interesting. Thanks for sharing your views. [whyaskq]
i like a song because of the words and the lyrics. most at times it's the lyrics and the intrumentals that make me like a song very much though sometimes i can't make the words out. [fredgame]
Maybe you are drawn by the music? [whyaskq]
Hello Mr. Big Head It's according to the type of song as to why I like it. Most of the time it's the music that draws my attention, but there are some rare occasions when the lyrics catch my attention. Even in those times, I have to like the music to like the song. There are many pieces I like that have no lyrics at all. [Transdisc]
Understand. I too am drawn first to music before the lyrics. There are cases I am drawn to the lyrics instead.. [whyaskq]
When it have a nice lyrics, it have a good meaning, good interpretation by the singer and good tune. [ciades]
hi whyaskq! when I like a song its usually because of the music and how they relate to each other for example in Cold War Kids 'Hang me out to dry - its the bass that chugs along nicely and the lead singers breathy drawled vocal that sets the tone of the song.to sum up its the emotionality of the music that backs up the lyrics and vice versa:) [jimbomuso]
Well when I hear a nice song usually Its the music that first attracts me!!! if my feet start moving with the beat I keep listening to it!!! and if the voice kool!!! it will make stay there for a while and if the lyrics are kool Only then I decide!!! Man this song rocks!!! other wise i might not listen to it again!!! [Dadexter]
yeah same with me, if i hear a catchy song i keep listening and if it has good lyrics it'll be a song i like :D [Raymond1342]
I have a very wide range of music that I love..Why or what makes me like a song or artist...lots of things..How it makes me feel in my soul, the lyrics, the beat, thats just a few things.... [Ravenladyj]
I like a song when I can easily relate. the lyrics are nice. I love a song that can think of me someone. [blush_blush]
I wish it was so easy for me to say why or why not I like a song. If I had to pick one quality of a song that would make me like it or not like it I would have to say the song would be one that I would be able to sing. I DO like songs of a certain genre and that is not to say that songs of another genre are not singable... so there is more to it than just that. Thanks for a great question. Zelo [zeloguy]
If a song makes me lose my train of thought of what I am doing when I hear it for the first time, that is a song that I like... a song that is ground-breaking... I can remember exactly where I was. When I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time I remember exactly who I was talking to, where I was and my though was what the **** is THAT! I LOVE IT. Of course that was the end of heavy metal music (for the most part) and the end of the hair bands and the introduction of Grunge into the world. Thanks Zelo [zeloguy]
rhythm, tempo, genre, my mood, memories stuck to that song... [jemuelfernandez]
In my case, I choose the song that I like through the beat and rhythm. That is usually the main factor. Second is the singer. Of course, I still have to check the lyrics and story of the song. If it works for me then so be it. If it won't then I'll just let it fade from my head. [nengs10]
well, am a musician myself, and for me it got to be good. it takes a hell lot of stuff to make a song, and if you want to make it good, you have to be care full from a to z. means the lyrics, the theme, the instruments, the vocal....everything must be good. [saurabh9899]
I see, a musician. Must be tough to ensure all must be good. Any liking for pieces from other musician? [whyaskq]
As a singer myself, it's often the infectious hook of a song that makes me wanna sing it...orit might be something personal aobut the song that speaks to me, and makes me want to emote my own feelings with it. Great lyrics are something I often find missing in today's songwriters. [Kashigurl]
I guess singers are great in that they are able to bring up the expressions and arouse the emotions of the audience. [whyaskq]
i like a particular song if i can understand and can relate to the message being played in that song. as simple as it is, i will never say i love the song only because of the singer, the song should be meaningful in order for me to like it. [djmarion]
Usually,I like the song which can move my heart. The songs are related with your mood. When you are happy, you want to listen to the bright songs. When you are unhappy, the sorrowful songs can make you crying. [Denney]
Maybe for me, a pleasant song is the one which can tell what moves me a lot in my mind. I find the melody and the lyrics are the most important parts to tell a song's emotion. And that's also why I like singing, to speak my our language in my own way. [whitewing]
music and lyrics. i dont really care what sort of music it is as longs as the song is good [pokerpuller1]
For me, depending on the type of song... when its a romance/love song, its the lyrics and the melody of the song that I like. When it comes to rock or hit songs... its the beat of the song. But there are times that I hear the song, then I feel that I already like the song and want to hear it over and over again. it happens most of the time here in the shop when the customer just keep on playing the song almost everyday. [lucky_witch]
Thanks for highlighting the variation. [whyaskq]
It depends on my mood, to a large extent. Sometimes I might like a song and then later listen to it again and not understand what I liked about it originally. I'm just weird like that, I guess. There are some singers that I'm going to like almost anything they do, because I'm just that obsessed with them. You could have Stevie Nicks singing just about anything and I'd listen to it, or Sarah McLachlan, or Loreeena McKennitt, or... the list goes on and on. If, on the other hand, it's not a singer I'm familiar with, the lyrics are probably going to be the main thing for me. Unless I'm trying to dance (trying being the operative word there), in which case the music might be more important to me. But usually, if I'm just relaxing and listening to music, it has to have good lyrics. I want a story song, or a song that conveys feelings I can relate to. [lecanis]
I don't think you are wierd. I too listen to songs again and again without knowing what I like about it. [whyaskq]
im a lover of all types of music, from alternative and hard rock to classical even country. what makes me like a song is if i can FEEL it. if the artist is really putting their heart into what theyre doing, and it reaches through the speakers and touches me. there are artists that put out albums just for the money, and there are others that do the work because it is in their souls, and you can definitely tell the difference tween the two. [tessah]
The honest and earnest always appeal. Thanks. [whyaskq]
Its the tune!!!...as simple as that for me..the words matter not!!!..I can always make them up!!...but if the tune is catchy..well it just stays with me...and a lot of todays music is great!!! [ruby222]
well, if the music makes me more comfortable, i really like it, and may be i will like the song if the singer is famous, even i don like the lyrics or the way he or she sings, [gmwgreat]
I think with me it depends on the tune and the sound. I like certain types of music and if it has a nice beat, or cruisy one then I tend to focus on that first, then find out who sings it and then go from there. Somestimes the lyrics capture me first but mostly it's the sound that attracts me first off. [maddysmommy]
Guess most of us are attracted to the music first. I may ask, will you be first attracted by a scream or cry? :PP [whyaskq]
it,s the lyrics for me i don,t care who sings the song if i like the words to the song [GoSaintsNo1]
Sometimes I do think I can sing better than the singer :P [whyaskq]
i do listen to the lyrics as well as the rythms in the songs, i do always try to listen to the music according to what the singer is saying,if i like the rythyms and even if i dont get the words io still like the song as long as the rythm and beats are good enough i will like the song [emma44]
It´s a bit of a mixture of everything you mentioned here. I love David Bowie´s voice, but if his lyrics and music were bad (which is not the case in my opinion) I wouldn´t listen to him. I do make exceptions when I go to a discotheque though, because I would never dance or even stay there for more than half an hour if I would pay a lot of attention to the lyrics. Mind you, I hardly ever go there, (guess I´m getting old):-)). [dana234]
One is never too old to go into a discotheque, dana. I find the music too loud for my ears though :P [whyaskq]
There are lots of things to take into consideration. Sometimes it is the amount of times I hear at song, perhaps at first I do not like it but after hearing it a few times it begins to grow on me. Secondly it depends if it is my type of music, ie chart, pop, dance, RnB, some hiphop, rock or trance. Thirdly it depends on the artist, if it is someone I normally listen too then there is a good chance I will like it. Finally if the lyrics are good and it has a good beat to it I will normally like it. [LauraT2008]
those except its so dead I don't know what that means, I also like the chorus, or the loops, sometimes I don't know the words to the song only the chorus, I may like the beat I might find the song has profound meaning, it may touch my heart in a special way, make me happy, make me sad make me want to dance make me want to cry [winterose]
well it certainly isn't over production to make it sound as far from being duplicated by a human voice and a couple of instruments. It also isn't something that had to have a multi-million advertising budget to tell people it is good. This all leads to why I love indie music from a lot of people no one else has really heard of. These are real people putting their hearts into their sound. When I listen to music I want to know if I go see them live they can reproduce what I heard on the CD. I do a fairly regular indie music review on the The Other Blog at http://www.bradsotherblog.com [bradhart]
if i can relate myself to the lyrics..then..i like the song! [simplyjemz]
Ok so the music has to catch my attention and then I listen to the actual lyrics. They have to be something that I can relate to or something really catchy for me to be like OMG I love that song. Mostly a good beat too. If the music is dull then it really doesn't matter what they are saying because I stop listening. [luvingmygirls]
well most of off if when i hear it, i will feel comfortable with it. and if i like the melody and the lyrics of the song. there are times too that even if the song is beautiful but the artist is what i don't like, i will listen to it too. [chiyosan]
I think the best songs that the songs made to like them is that the lyrics is beautiful and can give you a deep though and so on. The sound of the songs must be soft or nature .Only in this way ,you can give yourselves good lives ! [haolianlian]
It all depends on the song. Usually it is the music but I have heard some great lyrics that really got my attention. But it is great when it is both the music and the lyrics that attracts me. [sarahruthbeth22]
For me it would be the lyrics and the beat. I particulary like Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and JOhn Mayer. There's something about the three that makes me listen to them. :) [magnate101]
the combination of the music and lyrics.. and how it was delivered by the singer.. [jdfo82]
I am more satisfied to hear about the lyrics of the song and the melody of the music. I don't care who is the singer as long the lyrics and the melody rhymes into my heart. [lynboobsy11]
hi whyaskq, how's your day? happy anyway, it really depends to the person.. it can be on the singer, if he is a die-hard fan... or the meaning of the song or its tune or melody.. for me, either or combination of the three makes me decide to like a song... thanks for posting and sharing this....rolleyes cheers and God bless... [delgar]
Its the meaning that it carries and the words that it has.. [maathav]
though there are numerous medium for self expression but songs are the most approachable facts.it often discussed that songs revives and reflects human nature of understanding and once attitudes towards self and others.well for me songs are not merely meant as source of entertainment but it is self realiazation and passionate ways of reflecting facts of world.songs must inherit meaning ful message ,especially highlighting social, cultural and economic aspects.nevertheless for appealing masses commandable voice is a must. [niitesh]
Songs are also a means to convey emotions. Good point. [whyaskq]
With me it is always the music. That is why I like arias and enjoy many songs regardless of what language it is sung in. [whiteheather39]
It's all about making the lyrics believable, for me. It's not necessarily the best lyrics, the best vocals or the best music....it's a lot like a movie...if you aren't convinced the actor isn't acting..you won't like the movie,no matter how great the soundtrack and set design are. [unclestan]
You know when I hear the song I just like it or not.. not always it must be good voice or significant lyrics.. If the song has something special, something unsearchable, involve me in her sounds.. that is the reason why I like it:) [gadabout21]
I guess it is the combination of all that make me like a song especially the lyric and tune. As I like dancing very much, I like any song that can make me shake and enjoy the tune of the music. Whereas for sentimental song, I always go for the lyric. If the lyric is meaningful and touching, I will surely like the song. [goldwin65]
Depends where I'm hearing it or if I've heard it before, but it's mainly the tune that hooks Me,starting with the Intro...If I'm in the car and I can recognise the intro, depending if I like it or not I can turn it up or change station..this is when I'm on my own..My car,My Rules :) Driving choons-good! [ShepherdSpy]
I listen to songs of all kinds of music and if the songs makes me feel good so I would sa that it is the lyrics and the music regardless of who sings it [sweetaspie52]
Well ... when I hear a song and it is appealing because of the tune ... I will start to listen to it over and over. I then notice the lyrics and if they are meaningful ... then I will start to like the song even better. There are some artists and groups that I will specifically seek out because I enjoy their music. Does anyone know the song that is sung in the JC Penney commercial ... or the song that someone sings in the MacAir commercial? I love both of these songs and don't know the names or singers. I find myself whistling these catchy little tunes throughout the day! whistle [marilynut]
The first reason why I like songs is because of the melody. Genre is also a factor. I like acoustic and pop songs. The lyrics and the singer matters also but as I have observed I like the songs with good lyrics. Good lyrics, good composers and good singers is a perfect blend for a song. I have posted some of favorite songs in http://favemusiconline.blogspot.com [wrangel15]
a uitat so i litsin to the melodys playing in the backround, the bridge and the solo. I usually like most deth metal though [Almaster0]
For me it's mostly about the lyrics. The right song lyrics just kill me every time. Sometimes the sound of a song, which is not entirely the melody, can get me. I think of it as "the groove" and it's just a very easy sounding song. Recently the "Bubbly" song would qualify as "the groove" for me. But really it's mostly about the words for me. [tentwo67]
Different songs strike me different ways. Sometimes I really like the beat of the song, so I will listen to it a lot. From this, I will learn the words, and usually like them as well. Also, sometimes I will hear the words to a song, and really like it, especially if it sends out a good, loving, and/or fun message. There are other times when I hear my favorite artist has a new song out, and I will listen to it just because of the singer...but that doesn't mean I will like it. [Kecia08]
Good points you brought up. [whyaskq]
It is the rythm that first attacks me to a song. Then if the lyrics are catchy or saying something positive or just cool, then I will listen to it all the way through. If the rythm is not good, I lose interest immediately. [Rozie37]
The song which basically appeals good to ears is liked by everybody.I like songs which are soothing and lirics makes me feel relaxed and pleasure at the same time. [nandinim]
For me the music, and melody have to catch me. Since I can never get the lyrics right the first few times, this has to be the sinker for me. I love all musice and when I say all, I mean all. Like the opening for "Another One Bites the Dust" Queen, is one of the best. The start of "Big Poppa" from Biggie is also slamming and smooth. Others like the "Sweet Child O Mine" Rifs really open my ears. I can hear them over and over and those instruments and melodies grab me. [BigO32]
I like the music, the words, how it sounds, and the singer has to be good as well. He or she has to sound as if his or her voice is the most beautiful, that the words are clear, and that the words of the song come right out. The singer has to portray the emotions, so that when you hear the melody, you are transformed. If I can listen to a song, and tears fill my eye, and if I can imagine the moon shining down, and the stars, then it is a good song. [suspenseful]
The melody , the lyrics and the music as a whole.I don't care who sing that song and i prefer love songs. [giePortlandOR_08]
I think that the lyrics are the thing that makes me like a song. I think that I like when the lyrics tell a story. You can really tell how someone feels just by listening to the lyrics. The music adds to the song. I kind of think songs are like poems with music. [cortney09]
Hey there why - long time no see! As to what makes me like a song - well I guess for me it is all about the rhythm , if that is good then we are on a great start, if the singer connects with the song then even better! I love a song where you can 'feel' it - if you get what I mean! xxx [mummymo]
for me, its either of the things you mentioned. i can like a song because of the melody, or because of the lyrics, or because i like the artist. but its seldom that i like a song just because of the lyrics. that would be my last criteria. its usually the melody or the music that makes me like or dislike a song. and then, the artist matters too. sometimes if i like an artist, i would immediately like whatever songs he or she sang. happy [secretbear]
for me its the melody and the lyrics regardless who sings it.. [vanities]
well some songs really get a good grip towards the listeners. I mean, okay the singer maybe cool, beautiful, handsome, great singing, great lyrics or whatever, but I often found that even songs without lyrics, were often 'amazing' for me. I love some instrumental songs and I mean they were not really very great if we talk about the music technique or how good the musician played it. I can like any song but never become a fan of the singers / musicians. however, I have to admit, I'm quite connected to some songs, even just those ones without the lyrics, but maybe because my mind just feels connected with the melodies, or even just the background melodies or the theme of the song. I think our mind and our soul react to some certain song unknowingly, and we just then start to like the songs, the more we listen to them, the more we love the songs. so it was some kinda .... unexplainable for some certain people. I may love Middle Eastern theme for example, and someone else may feel I have a bit 'unusual' taste of music. the person might love R&B, and I would think his / her taste was 'unusual' too. it is the state of mind of each person, perhaps? :P [bongkarpasang]
What makes me decide if i like a song is the lyrics, music, singer, etc. There are a lot of things that go into what would make me like or dislike a song. [soulist]
i like the singer to be hott!! no j/k i like the voice the guy from incubus sooo hott inc. his voice and u know even slipknots lead singer he sings real good too.. [ROXYZMOMMY]
for me, the song has to be constructed well. it needs to have good lyrics, it needs to have the write kinf of mood, it has to be original or relaxing or good quality... it's hard to say why i like certain songs - some i like that nobody else in the world would like... but if i like it, then i'm not too worried about anyone else liking it :) [vera5d]
The lyrics are the most important thing to me, they either have to make me think or be able to identify with them for me to like the song, I like comedy music too so if they make me laugh that can help. I also like a good guitar or piano solo and I like rock music so if it rocks and has good lyrics and the singer is talented I'll like it. There's a lot of people in the charts nowadays who don't have interesting voices or good vocal Ranges that really bugs me as they all sound the same. [nancyrowina]
I like the music for what it is. I need to like the melody, the singer's voice, if there is a singer, the instruments used, and the rhythem. I listen to a lot of songs in other languages, just because I like the way they sound. I don't need to be able to understand the lyrics, in order to enjoy a song. [danishcanadian]
