Greetings One of the keys for my 2001 530 has gradually stopped working The Bentley manual shows how to replace the battery in pre 2001 models but says that from 2001 on the battery recharges while the key is in the ignition I think The owner s manual illustrates the remote key batteries being easily replaced however I do not see how easily the backing snaps off 2006 E60 I had read that while the key is in the ignition lock it does recharge the battery My question is

First off I do not want to burst your bubble BUT BMW Keys are expensive to replace I was quoted 660 00 by my local BMW Dealer Over 300 00 for the key plus 300 00 for the Dealer to pair it with my car The other option is via a BMW Mini Dealer that will send you the key along with you pairing the key to your car Sometimes when they re not used for a while they just need a charge and some people have used cordless electric toothbrush charging bases to recharge the key fob away from the car If the rechargeable battery has worn out it can be replaced but you have to cut the fob open desolder the battery and solder a new battery back in it s place
Whilst this is and old message trail I recently came across it as I had exactly the same problem with my 2017 435d having replaced both Fob key batteries with new Duracell s after 4 years of use when the message alert notified me Incidentally I had just had the car battery replaced the week before So not sure if linked My wife s key fob on our 2017 X1 F48 stopped working all the symptoms of a dead battery However I ve changed the battery and it s still not working We can still access start the car with her key using the old school key to get in the door and pressing the fob against the steering column to start but the key fob isn t syncing with the car

Disregard my post about 08 key fob battery replacement Found the answer in another forum Batter is recharged when used The faulty fob is my wife s and not used much Moral of the story Use it or lose it Thanks Jim I m only looking for battery replacement procedure for the key fob and according to BMW it cannot be done Thus an entire new key and fob need to be replaced and reprogrammed because the battery is not accessible A new key with fob by the way costs over 200 Bet you didn t even know that
